Both his parents were <\/span><b>devotees of Krishna and Jagannath,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as were their ancestors up to the time of <\/span><b>Sri Syamananda Prabhu.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> His mother\u2019s family were the famous <\/span><b>kirtaniyas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><b>Gadai Giri.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Thus most of His Divine Grace\u2019s child- and boyhood was spent in <\/span><b>Gadai Giri<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in the company of his uncles and maternal grandfather, having kirtan and worshiping their ancient family deity, <\/span><b>Sri Gopal Jiu.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> He was never attached to play, but rather spent his time reading <\/span><b>Srimad Bhagavatam<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Sri Chaitanya Charitamrta<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and singing <\/span><b>Hare Krishna.<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In April 1974, on Ramnavami, the day of the holy appearance of <\/span><b>Lord Ramachandra,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> His Divine Grace left his family to search for Sri Guru. He was now 45 years old but had since childhood had the desire to accept the renounced order of life, sannyasa, and preach the message of <\/span><b>Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> He was already acquainted with many sadhus in Orissa and throughout the rest of India, but was not satisfied by them. He travelled on foot and by train around northern India for about 5 months, stopping at every temple, monastery and institution where there might be a sadhu. Arriving at last in <\/span><b>Sri Vrindavan Dham,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> he met His Divine Grace <\/span><b>AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the 15th of September 1974. Among the first things <\/span><b>Srila Prabhupada<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> asked him was whether or not he had taken sannyasa. <\/span><b>Srila Prabhupada<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> said: \u201cI will give you sannyasa!\u201d. Within a short time <\/span><b>Srila Prabhupada initiated<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> him giving him Harinam and Diksa and the name <\/span><b>Sri Gour Govinda Das<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and sent him to preach in Orissa. On Ramnavami 1975, during the opening of the <\/span><b>Sri Sri Krishna Balaram Mandir<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Vrindavan, one year after he had left home, <\/span><b>Sri Gour Govinda Das<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was given sannyas by <\/span><b>Srila Prabhupada.<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus <\/span><b>Srila Gour Govinda Swami<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> came back to Orissa and gradually, after much hardships, opened the temple that <\/span><b>Srila Prabhupada<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had envisioned in Bhubaneswar. He also translated <\/span><b>Srila Prabhupada\u2019s books<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into the Oriyan language. From 1985 through 1996 His Divine Grace <\/span><b>Srila Gour Govinda Swami<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> preached throughout the world and accepted disciples. Thus he executed the three instructions <\/span><b>Srila Prabhupada<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> gave him.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though he had problems walking after an operation, His Divine Grace <\/span><b>Srila Gour Govinda Swami<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> travelled extensively and preached energetically. He spoke with the force and firmness of a bullet, yet was soft at heart. He stressed the value of purity and simplicity, emphasizing the importance of pure chanting and encouraging everyone to yearn for sadhu-sanga, the association of pure devotees. He warned against duplicity and the pollution that Kali has infiltrated into the minds of people in this age. In the evening of the appearance day of His Divine Grace <\/span><b>Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakura<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, on february 9th, two senior devotees asked <\/span><b>Srila Gour Govinda Swami<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> why xcMahaprabhu stayed in <\/span><b>Jagannath Puri.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> While narrating the pastime of <\/span><b>Lord Krishna<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> coming back to Vrindavan after a long separation and how He appeared in the form of Lord Jagannath, His Divine Grace <\/span><b>Srila Gour Govinda Swami Maharaj<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> departed from this world and entered into the Divine Lilas of <\/span><b>Sri
